The Commission for the Protection of Minors in the Media (KJM)

Games without taboos, such as the programme “Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus!” (I am a star – get me out of here!) or “Die Burg” (the castle) time and again have caused heated discussions in society. Since the year 2000 there have been new seasons of “Big Brother” at regular intervals in Germany. In reality or casting shows such as “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” (Germany is looking for a superstar) unknown people or celebrities are openly judged, often accompanied by derision and malice. Is it right that viewers have the power to decide by phone between victory and defeat? What does it mean for children, when they are put into a position of power which makes them the “master” of the participants’ fate? What kind of influence do cosmetic surgery shows such as “I want a famous face”, “Beauty Queen”, “Alles ist möglich” (anything is possible) or the TV show “The Swan” have on young people?

Not only these questions of concerned parents and guardians have an effect on the protection of minors in the media; the protection of minors from harmful media content plays a role in the internet as well – for example in played-down violence, extremist or pornographic content.

The Commission for the Protection of Minors in the Media (KJM), as the central office for the protection of minors and the protection of human dignity in commercial broadcasting and in telemedia (internet) is responsible for the investigation of programming complaints or potentially legally problematic content or offerings.
